| you made
the decision for your anti-virus software. it's time to install it and
set it up correctly.
most options
are similar. if you don't have the exact option, there should be something
similar.
enable on
access scanning, including at startup. this means each time a file is accessed,
whether to open or save, it is scanned.
scan everything,
memory, all files on all drives (that means cds, dvds, floppies, all removeable
and permenent devices). scan inside archve files also. email is a primary
place to scan as many viruses are attachments or the actual mail.
enable options
to
scan scripts. scripts may be embedded in other files, especially web pages.
the most commonly used scripts are java script and vb script.
enable options
to block connections if a remote computer tries to write a virus on your
system. this may be from an intruder or website.
most applications
have a second method of scanning - heuristic. these scans may find a virus
or similar that does not yet have a signature file.
many applications
can also detect unwanted programs.
enable automatic
updating of the signature files (anti-virus definitions) and engine so
you don't have to think about it. set this function for a time you are
usually sleeping works best. the computer needs to be connected.
other options
include actions if a virus is found. should it be deleted? quarantined?
are you notified? these are personal decisions. the best option is to try
and clean the file. all files cannot be cleaned, requiring a secondary
choice.
keep a log
file of all activity and check it every so often. |
